re: Motion to Reduce the Number of “Doorings” in Toronto
Dear Mayor and Councillors,
I write to share information to assist your deliberations and possible future actions to address doorings by ride share passengers in Toronto.
Toronto is by no means alone in its attempt to protect vulnerable road users (and ride share passengers themselves) from life altering injuries due to inattentive and neglent conduct.
VIDEOS & ADVISORIES:
It is noteworthy that Uber Co. has been long aware of the inexperience and heedlessness of its drivers. They produced a 4 series of short driver road share training videos for their San Francisco employees in 2016.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents UK, Massachusetts Dept. of Transportation, & the US Governor's Traffic Safety Assn have also produced either videos and/or advisories recognizing the far hand method as a best safety practice.

SIGNAGE: New York Bicycling Committee has produced Dutch Reach signage for 'cling' decal for vehicle windows and traffic sign usage. (See attached).
Ride share drivers must be trained in the method, but heedless ride share passengers are the main offenders. Having prepaid electronically impatient passengers demand or simply exit when the vehicle is stopped in traffic near their destination. As they rate their drivers, the drivers are hesitant if not powerless to stop such safety violations.
