Instructeur: Donc, je sais que cela semble un peu idiot, mais le Reach néerlandais pourrait probablement sauver la vie de quelqu'un.
Lorsque nous nous dirigeons vers un parking, la plupart d'entre nous ne réfléchissent pas vraiment à la façon dont nous ouvrons la porte de notre voiture.
Nous mettons notre voiture dans le parc. Nous l'éteignons, et nous l'ouvrons généralement avec notre main gauche ... Nous ne nous regardons pas vraiment.
Mais ce que le Dutch Reach est, c'est ce mouvement où vous atteignez votre main droite au lieu de votre gauche ... ce qui va forcer votre corps ... votre haut du corps à se retourner et à chercher les cyclistes à venir.
À tout le moins, vous allez regarder dans votre rétroviseur.
Aux Pays-Bas, c'est à peu près la norme culturelle. Je veux dire qu'ils enseignent même dans la classe [éducation] de leur conducteur.
Donc, la prochaine fois que vous ouvrez la porte de votre voiture, faites comme le font les Néerlandais, les Hollandais atteignent!

Man w Glasses: The Dutch Reach? No idea!
Man with Cap: I've no idea.
Woman: No idea.
MVO: Never heard of the Dutch Reach?
Woman: Never heard of it. No.
Man in Blue Shirt: Sounds filthy!
MVO: Can you venture a guess as to what it is

THE DUTCH REACH - ( SAFE FOR WORK )
Instructor: So we I know it sounds a little silly, but the Dutch Reach could probably save someone's life.
When we pull up to a parking spot most of us don't really think about how we open up our car door.
We put our car in park. We turn it off, and we usually open it with our left hand…Not really looking out or behind us.
But what the Dutch Reach is, is that movement where you reach over with your right hand instead of your left…which will force your body … your upper body to turn around and look for on-coming cyclists.
At the very least you're going to look in your rear view mirror.
In The Netherlands, this is pretty much the cultural norm. I mean they even teach in their driver's ed [education] class.
So next time you're opening up your car door, do as the Dutch do, the Dutch Reach!

* NSFW is an abbreviation signifying “Not Safe For Work.” Among the web-savvy, NSFW implies taboo or pornographic web content which can get employees into trouble if caught watching it at work. No surprise then that SFW is “Safe for Work” and watching won’t get you into trouble if caught viewing at work -- except of course for slacking off.
** The "Turkish Get-Up" remained a mystery, at least to the Dutch Reach Project, until March of 2019 when Adam M. of Oregon did the heavy lift to answer my longstanding plea for enlightenment in this very footnote. By email Adam explained:
"The Turkish Get Up consists of lying on the floor and holding a kettlebell above your head. You then move to a standing position while keeping your arm outstretched. It is also SFW."
So there we have it. One more beer or cocktail party anecdote for Dutch Reach cognoscenti! As for why Turkish, see preceeding link.
